Yoga for Athletes

Yoga For Athletes – If you want truly to understand something, try to change it

Yoga improves your breathing, balance, flexibility, core strength, and endurance.

Yoga is becoming increasingly popular as a tool for improving athletic performance and preventing injury. Ryan Giggs, Andy Murray, Serena Williams and The New Zealand All Blacks, to name only a few, all tap into the immense power of Yoga. Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger truly recognise the importance of Yoga, having Yoga Teachers on the payroll.

“Yoga is one of the reasons that I’ve had such a good run without major injury, something I’ve never really enjoyed since the start of my career. I’ve been doing Yoga for two years now and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I’ve not had to miss many games in this period. It’s definitely helped my hamstrings and my back,” Ryan Giggs, Manchester United.

“There is no way I could have played basketball as long as I did without yoga. My friends and teammates think I made a deal with the devil. But it was yoga that made my training complete.” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Yoga in Schools

Yoga In Schools – Yoga develops the many wonderful qualities in children

Why Yoga for children? Yoga is gaining momentum in the world today and rightly so. Children and Yoga are a natural match. Whilst having great fun, children can develop healthy bodies and healthy habits. This is something they can keep with them for the rest of their lives.

Yoga develops many wonderful qualities in children. Beside the obvious benefits of exercising the physical body, Yoga sharpens the child’s ability to focus, gives self-confidence, and develops self-discipline. Yoga, practised regularly, helps children become aware of themselves from the inside out. From this awareness, changes and growth in new and positive directions can blossom.

Yoga is calming and is a wonderful stress reducer, which can be quite helpful for today’s generation. Whilst all children benefit from Yoga, those with hyperactivity or anxiety conditions may be especially well suited to Yoga classes.

In addition to the emotional benefits of Yoga, children reap a number of physical rewards. Increased strength, flexibility, better balance, improved coordination, and heightened body confidence are common for those who practise Yoga regularly.

When they stretch like a dog, balance like a flamingo, breathe like a bunny, or stand strong and tall like a tree, they are making a connection between the macrocosm of their environment and the microcosm of their bodies. The importance of reverence for all life and the principle of interdependence becomes apparent. Children begin to understand that we are all made of the same “stuff.” We’re just in different forms. The physical movements introduce children to Yoga’s true meaning: union, expression, and honour for oneself and one’s part in the delicate web of life.

In the long term classes will help children to develop a stronger sense of self-esteem, respect for one another and the values of a healthy lifestyle. This combination will lead to a well balanced individual, better prepared for the teenage years ahead.

One-to-one Yoga

One-To-One Sessions – Truly the most uplifting way to practice

  • I offer 2hr one-to-one sessions for £80. Should you want to invite friends there’s an additional charge of £15 per person.

Breathing (Pranayama)

“A more useful science than the science of respiration, a more beneficial
science than the science of respiration, a greater friend than the science of
respiration has never been seen nor heard.” Shivagama

Most people only use a fraction of their lung capacity for breathing. They breathe shallowly using a small part of the rib cage. Their shoulders are hunched, they have painful tension in the upper part of the back and neck, and they suffer from a lack of oxygen. These people become tired easily and don’t know why.

Breathing connects the body to its battery, the Solar Plexus, where tremendous potential energy is stored. When tapped through specific Yoga breathing techniques, pranayama, this energy is released for physical and mental rejuvenation. It can be used to fuel a specific physical effort, such as tennis or jogging or you can use this inner energy to relieve muscular tension, revitalise a tired mind, or soothe localised aches and pains. Yoga breathing techniques breathing can be life changing for asthma sufferers.

Through various pranayama techniques, breathing exercises, Yoga opens ones capacity to breathe properly, increasing vital energy. I offer 2hr one-to-one sessions for £80. Should you want to invite friends there’s an additional charge of £15 per person.
